Maybe because he’d been naive enough for a while to believe her when she’d professed to love him. Yeah, he’d been young, and he’d believed anything was possible. Almost as stupid as his ma and her tealeaves. In his book, there were mistakes and there were sins: a sin was making the same mistake the second time. And he sure didn’t need to be looking at her every day, remembering how she’d deceived him, remembering emotions flowing as rampantly as his hormones.

he answered, and this just made me even more curious to ask him more questions. “Even though you can order it, but then it would take days for it to get here and you need it right now, so you had to come here,” I answered, giving him an explanation, and he nodded in agreement, immediately locking in. “What’s the name of this book?” I asked, and he swallowed. “Just an old classic historical romance book; Rebellious Love by Maura Seger,” he answered, and I slowly nodded. “Okay then,” I said as I took slow steps away from him.

Pulling the pillow down, I turned to look at her. “Tori, without any doubt, you've been doing your best….honestly, you've done more than your best and I really really love and appreciate you. I don't want anything to happen to your Dad, nothing at all, but, what kind of mother would I be if I let you get married to a strange man?”

My chest tightened, and my hands itched to force the truth out of him. I pushed on. “Do you remember the gardens? The afternoons we ran until we collapsed in the grass? Do you remember the nights I cried, and how you were the only one who hugged me?” “At least try, try and remember something”. I screamed out of desperation. He gave nothing back, just a small tilt of his head. My chest burned with anger, frustration, and despair. The boy I had loved and trusted for so many years was gone. In his place stood a calm stranger, acting a part that didn’t feel real.

I might not remember what he said or what I said or why that moment mattered so much. But my body remembers. It remembers being loved by him. I flip through the pages, and I see sentences highlighted in yellow ink. My eyes catch on one in particular. "I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride." I close the book hard. My hands are shaking. I hate this. I hate that some stupid, broken part of me still cares. He's with Lea now.
