His eyes flick back to me, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. I have to get out of here before I do something stupid. "Well, it was great meeting you," I say, already reaching for a bag I knew I wasn't carrying. When i didn't find anything, I smiled. "I've got to run…I have a lot to do." I barely wait for their responses before rushing out the door, my heart hammering against my ribs. I can't believe this is happening. The random old man I fuck turns out to be married to my mom? Before my father passed away when I was ten, I used to think that matrimony is between two people that love each other dearly. That was until my mother passed away. I had believed in that until Liam- my stepfather had married another woman. There was not an ounce of love between them and the words they used to call each other were nothing close to good. They were together for their selfish reasons.

Those words were a bit unexpected for Simon and Maria. As they both were kids they didn’t know the real meaning of marriage at all. Simon stared at Lisa and Augustus’s face trying to figure out the words in his mind. After a moment of silence he said, “My dad has died so it means you’re now my step dad?” The word “step-dad” felt a bit unpleasant to hear but still Augustus nodded calmly. Simon turned to look at Lisa, whose face was turned pale at the moment and she looked quite nervous too. He held Lisa’s hand and said, “Mommy, you have married a good man I hope daddy must be happy in the heaven.”

My stepdad knew I wasn't happy with the arranged marriage, and when he tried to speak up about it, my mother reminded him he wasn't my real father. We were both upset about that remark. I could see the pain in his eyes and would always commend him for his patience with her. My biological father met his fated mate and rejected my mother to be with her. My mother was disgraced and heartbroken, but my stepdad had been in love with her even when she was with my dad, so he claimed her once she was free of my father, not caring what anyone would say.

My mom remarried a few months ago, and now there's this new guy in the house, Alex. He's not bad-looking for someone in his forties. Tall, with broad shoulders from whatever gym routine he sticks to, and this deep voice that rumbles when he says good morning, but he's my stepdad now, which makes everything weird.
