I missed my mother, I wished she was here. It was a struggle for me. My mother's death was slowly resurfacing, and I hoped I could finish this mission before it consumed me totally. I had to focus. I had to keep going.

Darius's POV I just wish someone would pop out of nowhere and tell me that I wasn't like my father—that I was different. But even if they did, I knew they would be lying. They would just be sugarcoating it. My hands reached out, pulling the diary out from beneath the pillow. I flipped the pages, stopping when I reached the last page that was specifically written for me, and then I started rereading it, stopping at the word freedom. It was an essential, pardonable thing in everybody's life, and that was the reason Mom died—because hers was taken away from her by her once beloved husband.

"Pack healers don't come at your beck and call. Without the Alpha's order, even if Celia's really in trouble, you'll just have to wait until morning." The edges of my vision went dark, and I nearly collapsed. Suddenly, Mom was wracked with violent coughs, with blood pouring from her mouth. She seemed to want to say something, but in the end, her lips only moved silently before all breath left her body. "Mom!" I shook her shoulders in a frenzy. "Open your eyes! Don't die on me!" I draped her pancakes with honey and dropped it on the table right in front of her, serving it with a glass of milk, after which I went back to the kitchen and had mine with a cup of hot chocolate. No one was at the hospital when I got there, and luckily for me, I brought a book along, so I sat right beside the bed and started reading the book. The book was “ My Father's Wish” by Bellaboy, a touching story of how a young man, Hunter, was set up by his late father's will to marry his middle school bully, Hazel, just so that he; Hunter, could claim his inheritance.

However, as I stood there in the tea cup, eyes wide as saucers, fingers trembling, I finally understood that he was right. As if the moongoddess was trying to tell me that was the last moment on earth, memories of my horrible life started coming at me fast. First, it was the day I found out how much mom truly died, how Dad accused me of killing her, then the series of crazy things that happened in my life, to the moment I gave birth, how my life had been hell. And that day, I almost died two times in less than twenty-four hours. The fire was coming at us fast and I knew that in any second, Ravok would have to let go of me and save himself so I closed my eyes and waited…

It seemed as though every last drop of strength had been emptied from her body, yet she still refused to surrender. She looked down on everyone, until one of her rivals was pushed too far and hired an assassin. She hadn't forgotten—the dark gun barrel, the cold ground beneath her, the terror of being completely helpless.

“Claire, the one who died is your mother. Go see her one last time.” She froze for several seconds before suddenly exploding in rage. “My mom would never go to this kind of low-end market! Only your mom, that money-grubbing peasant, would come here just to snatch discounted groceries!”

On the night of Mom's birthday, as she was making a wish under the moon, Dad suddenly leaned close to her ear and whispered something. My usually cautious mother, who valued her life above all else, turned around after hearing those words and jumped straight into the pack's silver pit. The silver pit is deadly for us werewolves; only those with a death wish would go there. After Mom died, Dad became infamous. Because Mom was the most cautious person in our pack, her sudden suicide by jumping into the silver pit had to be triggered by Dad's whispered words.

"Why couldn't you just die quietly? Why did you have to stand in Claire's way? I should never have agreed to take you back! "I gave birth to you, raised you, and gave you the best of everything. Why must you stand in her way?" I glanced at the time and spoke calmly. "If I die in this fire, so be it. What's tragic is that your precious daughter will be going to hell with me at her age." The way I shook my head in fake regret clearly hit a nerve. Mom's composure snapped. "Stop it! Stop right now!" she screamed. The flames vanished, and the last piece of the puzzle finally clicked into place in my mind.
