Ember followed me around the room, weaving between my ankles, meowing her disapproval. "I'll be back soon," I told her. She meowed again. "Fine. I'll be back eventually." She sat on my boot. I sighed then picked her up and kissed her forehead. "You're lucky you're cute." She purred sweetly. I set her on the bed, grabbed my bag and walked out through the door. The rink was cold. Colder than usual. The ice glittered beneath the lights, black and smooth and hungry. Wolves were already on the ice; circling, stretching, laughing. The sound of sticks on pucks echoed off the walls.

Asher He was browsing the history section in the bookstore, looking for something new to read. The boys were in the ice cream store, and he’d meet them later. He was about to give up when he turned into the children’s section and stood staring at the book in front of him. The cover had a bright yellow sun with a smiling face. A white, fluffy sheep sat on a porch that overlooked horses in a paddock. He picked it up and traced his fingers over the title of the book. The adventures of Morbid the sheep.

‘How would I know a cute rabbit could be that fierce’ ivory responded angrily. Anita threw two books at ivory which she caught. ‘Why are you giving me these’ ivory asks. ‘Since you don’t want my help you should at least know how help yourself…one book contains details about animals in this world while the other is a technique book’. Ivory looks at the technique book ‘ice dome…I could learn this at the library’. ‘How many times do I have to tell you, my stuffs aren’t ordinary…that ice dome has the ability to protect the user and whoever is inside an…’

The little black cat curled up in her lap as usual. "Tonight we find out the real skinny on this, kitty," she murmured as she opened the heavy book to the page she had marked. "I don't even know what I'm looking for any more but I hope I find it soon." She opened the book to the place she'd marked, two pages of hand-drawn sketches. One of the drawings especially caught her eye. The face of the wolf looked almost human and she had the bizarre feeling the animal was staring out at her from the page.

Walking out of the Chief’s office, she is immediately met with the presence of Robins. “Speak of the devil and he shall appear” she says aloud. “Sometimes I wonder if we are in a zoo, but I always tell myself it is only one animal we have here” he responds also, looking at her hatefully. “Hey, you can insult me, but never bring innocent animals to this and again they seem to have more sense than you do” she barks at him, glaring at him. Everyone in the office stops what they are doing to look at them, but makes no attempt of getting in to settle it, because they know the consequences.

I pull my head back fast, my heart kicking against my ribs like a trapped rabbit. "How long has your wolf been hiding in this dark corner?" Danica had agreed to meet me, and now we were here, skates on, the world outside forgotten. She looked beautiful under the low lights, her long straight hair loose and swaying as she skated. I held her hand, guiding her around the rink, our blades cutting smooth lines into the fresh ice. The cold air carried the faint scent of the Zamboni and the distant echo of our laughter. For the first time in weeks, the pressure of the series felt far away. “I brought something,” I said, stopping at the boards. I pulled out a small cooler from my bag — two cups of her favorite ice cream. “Thought we could have a little treat on the ice. No pressure. Just us.”

[ Scarlett POV ] There is a specific kind of silence that settles over a room full of athletes when they've collectively decided to wait for you to fail. I'd grown up inside that silence. I'd learned to skate in it, learned to read the ice through it, learned to locate exactly where it lived in my body, just below my shoulder blades, a tightening that I breathed through until it became nothing, just air, just background. I'd been doing it since I was the only girl at my first hockey camp at age nine and every boy in my group had looked at me with that same particular expression: patient, almost kind, absolutely certain.

The Blizzard’s practice facility echoed with the sharp crack of pucks and the shouts of teammates, but I barely heard them.
