In the Arms of the Enemy’s Brother
My vision shimmered, tears finally breaking free despite my effort to hold them back.
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
Roman waited, but the dam had cracked.
I pressed my lips together, trying to stop the tears, but they came anyway hot, silent, relentless. My shoulders started to shake.
“I tried to make it work,” I said through the tears. “I really did.”
My chest hurt. Each breath felt uneven.
“I kept thinking if I was calmer, quieter, more understanding, things would get better.” I laughed weakly, bitterly. “They never did.”
