My body aches, but nothing hurts as much as the emptiness growing inside my chest. I shuffle forward and kneel next to the frame, reaching for one of the wooden slats that once supported the mattress. I try to wedge it back into place, but the other side is cracked, and the bracket it belongs to has been ripped straight from the joint. I try again. It doesn’t fit. Nothing fits. He broke it beyond repair. My hands fall to my lap. I stare at the wreckage, and for a moment, I forget how to breathe. Then it all hits at once.

' 'That heartless woman! She had used this method to take revenge on me. On top of the divorce agreement was a folded medical report. My hands trembled violently with rage, barely able to hold the thin sheet of paper. It was a miscarriage report. "No... It can’t be..." I muttered to myself, feeling the world spin around me. I tried to reach out to Jessica telepathically, but it was as if an invisible wall kept us apart. It was impenetrable. Jessica had completely severed our connection.

My head started to ache from all the possibilities running wild in my head. "Madam," my Spanish maid Sophia called me out, running toward me and saying, "Madam, he has come." She said while panting. Layered. “I am not an empty vessel,” I said, standing in the illusion. “I am not a cup for the moon to pour into and pour out of. I am a person. I chose this bond.” I reached up and touched the mirror. “Break,” I said. It did. The glass shattered without cutting me, dissolving into harmless light that rained down and then evaporated. The elders vanished. The temple peeled away. The Veil’s half-light replaced it, the serpent’s presence shriveling like a slug dashed with salt.

I don't know how to explain it, but I usually don't sit well with everything. "I understand the feeling. You are probably broken. I'm so sorry. But there's no need to feel that way. I'm here now.”

Coated my cheeks in a sheet of moisture. But the laughing didn't stop. "I really am fucking broken, aren't I?" I asked through my fits. Bellamy shook his head. "Broken doesn't mean unfixable. We will get through this. Whatever you need, I will be here. Even if you don't tell him about me-" Another choked maniacal laugh rumbled into being between us. I couldn't help it.

I won’t hesitate and I definitely won’t lose. “Break it.” The voice again. Closer now. Not around me. Inside me. “I already did,” I whisper. My fingers twitch. But they don’t feel like mine. Not completely. Not anymore. “Not enough,” it replies. Of course not. It’s never enough. Pain lingers in my bones— No— What’s left of them. Because something changed when I hit that ground. Something cracked. And something else— Slipped in. “You’re still holding on,” it says.
