Chapter sixteen: A new dawn Late summer sunshine gilded the facade of Montrose Hall as Isabelle Montrose stepped into the grand gallery annex, her breath catching at the sight before her. Rows of mahogany easels displayed her charcoal and watercolor drawings—renderings of flickering embers, twisting serpents, interlaced keys, and the silver blue flame she and Alexander had kindled in Saint Brigid’s crypt. Each piece was accompanied by a brief inscription in flowing Latin and English, celebrating the Ember Circle’s rebirth in truth.

Instantly, his head felt a subtle sting when it accepted an overload of memories where he tried hard to forget about. Noel's eyes twitched, hiding his pain. "Please elaborate for me to understand." Madam Ruzka heed her Emperor’s command. "Do you remember the time when you see a figure of a person engulfed in shiny golden light? That was your Sol, your other half." In as much as the odds were uneven, the match was a 50-50, and on became a 60-40 in favour of the defenders. And the scale kept falling weight drastically at the dispense of the immortals.

Zamiel jibbed coldly. He's of course gonna be cold. "Get us to the tree-line." ​As the SUV roared to life, Leo looked back at the Miller Tower. It was no longer pulsing red, but it looked broken, a monument to a family that had tried to be gods and ended up as orphans. ​The Cabin in the Pines: ​Three hours later, the rain had turned to a thick, mountain mist. The SUV groaned as it climbed the unpaved trail toward the highest peaks of the Silverwood valley. Here, the pines grew so thick they choked out the light of the city below. The scent of damp earth and pine needles was so strong it made Leo’s wolf-half stir, a low, deep rumble in his chest that he hadn't felt since the fight in the Hall.

“The loser is the ugly one.” She invited the wrong girl. Zaya got there before she could take three steps on the stairs. “That’s unfair!” My daughter laughed while walking to her room. “Mina,” I asked her to watch over Zaya. I went to my library and sat on my favorite chair. Soon, Hella came in and sat next to me. “What was that?” “I don’t know,” “You looked bothered,” “I am, she said Zaya’s immortal. Only pure ones could have that immortality, Zaya can’t be immortal.” No matter how I said that. I couldn’t find it assuring as it should be.

"We're almost there." Through the trees, I caught glimpses of a sprawling structure—weathered gray stone and dark timber, designed to blend with the forest rather than stand apart from it.
