He enveloped me in his leather and whiskey scent, and his strong arms, and I let the rest of the world fall away. “Here it is.” Beau handed the book to Claire. “What exactly are we looking for in a book about magical blood feuds?” Claire ignored him as she flipped through and scanned the pages.

Blood dripped through the man's hands, which held the book's spine, slick with his own blood. “Tell me it was worth it,” whispered this man. “There was never a version of this where it wasn’t,” Lucifer whispered. Allistair tried to shout, but his vocal chords betrayed him. The battlefield erupted around him and screaming voices and pounding wings, and reality itself began to rend. The book thrummed. Not with a vibration of power or a flash of illumination. Just a presence, an absence that filled the space. The man caught in Lucifer’s grip shook as blood dripped from his fingers, seeping into the pages before disappearing as if devoured.

Notes from healers long gone filled the margins, written in different hands and different inks, as though each had added a piece of their own knowledge before passing the book on. I leaned against the shelf, my eyes racing across the page. With every line I read, my gift stirred beneath my skin, responding to the words as though they confirmed what it had sensed all along. "Blood rites," she read. "The art of draining life force for power." "That sounds promising." "It sounds terrifying." She sat on the floor and crossed her legs and Ember curled in her lap. I sat across from her and watched her read. Her brow furrowed and her lips moved silently and her fingers traced the lines of text.

Cassie The next morning I’m in the library returning a book I finished reading last night when I couldn’t sleep. The library is massive, two stories tall with built-in shelves that stretch all the way to the ceiling and one of those rolling ladders attached to a rail so you can reach the top shelves. There are reading chairs scattered throughout, deep leather things that look like they’ve been here for decades, and tall windows that let in streams of morning light. I’m tucking the book back into its spot on one of the lower shelves when I hear voices coming from deeper in the room, near the reading area by the fireplace.

He placed a hand on her shoulder and gave it a little squeeze. "So can you stop being paranoid now?" She opened her mouth to respond, but her words died on her lips when Bryan suddenly appeared before them.

We all felt the loss. “Fucking Onyx was crazy out there. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m glad she was on our side,” He chuckled, and a smile tugged at my lips. Yeah, she was. My kind of crazy. “Yeah. Both of you. You two looked like king and queen warriors out there. It was something,” Manix chimed in. Somehow despite what had happened, she seemed to be winning them over too. If only… “I still can’t believe she donated her blood. Vampires always think they’re better than us and that’s like taboo for them or something and she was no exception. But from what I heard; it helped a lot of our people.”
