The other men started to advance, forming a circle around me. I paid them no mind. They would fall with their leader and he would fall in five moves. “You should have left when you had the chance to,” I said then I shifted. Zino smirked at the surprises on their faces. I had mastered fast shifts long before they were conceived. Zavier was not so lucky. I pounced on him before he completed a shift.

“You have exactly three seconds to explain why you are in my room, touching my mate, before I rip your throat out.” Zariel's smirk faltered for a second, but he quickly recovered, his hard resolve returning. “Oh, Zade, always so dramatic,” he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “I was just paying a friendly visit to your little mate. No need to get your fur in a twist.” “Friendly visit?” Zade repeated, his voice dangerously calm. “You think barging into my room, uninvited and laying your filthy hands on my mate is a friendly visit?”

Devin sighed and gave me a pity look. “He’ll come around.” He assured me. “In the meantime, it’s a beautiful day and the sun is up. You wanna go for a walk?” he asked and shrugged his shoulders like it was no big deal, only if he knew what he just did. He just invited a vampire for a walk, in the sun. Good thing I’m a day lighter. “Sure.” I said and stood up from the chair I was seated. “So, what do you wanna talk about?” He asked swinging his arms beside him while staring at my face making me a little more uncomfortable than I already am.

The other four followed joining her as they stood at a distance far from the scene. Zane remained still wanting to torture these weaklings a lesson for them to spare some respect for Gidark - himself. He had lived for more than fifty years protecting this land they were standing on. His eyes weren't normal brown eyes, they were filled with rags and I could see them glowing yellow. They were looking straight at me, then over to Zara, who dangled above the flames. I saw his face. I saw the exact moment something in him just… broke. It wasn’t anger. It was something older, darker. Something primal.

His eyes meet mine, and for a moment, neither of us moves. The voice on the other end of the line speaks. "Ken, are you okay?" Ken, short for Kendrick? My hands turn clammy. My head spins. He doesn't break eye contact. After what feels like forever, he responds. "Yes, I am. Call me when you get back." He ends the call. I collapse onto the floor, my veil slipping loose around my neck.
