The day I had lost my Adeline. The maidens flocking around her room, the endless chatter and buzzing, which slowly faded into a deafening silence. The sound of her soul leaving her body… All of it had haunted me, reminding me of one of my greatest losses. The fear of reliving that nightmare was enough to wreck me.

The three of them eat some more cake and pack the rest of it back for the others to enjoy. Since yesterday, Adeline had been feeling quite anxious and nervous. When she had been cursed to desiccate, she had known that it would be some time before she woke up again. But she had never imagined that it would be almost a hundred years. The world she has woken up in is so drastically different from what she had left behind. She was happy to have her elder sister by her side. They had talked very late into the night and she had filled her in on a lot of things that had happened and changed since 1924.

She wanted to read, but there were no books in the new house—she’d forgotten to bring them. “Oh, wait… Mom gave me a package from Aunt Samantha earlier. Maybe there are books inside,” Adeline said to herself, happily grabbing the paper bag. Inside were two books with different covers: The Marriage Secrets and The Baby Book. Samantha had obviously chosen them for Adeline. “I’m not really interested in these kinds of books… but it’s better than being bored,” she muttered, settling on the sofa with the books. Inevitably, she drifted off to sleep while reading—a habit she’d had for years.

I don't know what was happening but I felt my senses blurry and vision hazy. Mom and Gabriel led me out of the cottage as I continued hearing the old woman mutter things about evil, darkness, light, death, life, mystery, key, kiss of the shadow. Everything was a daze to me now. Before I know it, I throw up while mom pats my back lightly shushing me. I don't know what was happening to me but I wasn't okay at all. We made it to the car where Gabriel drove us away. The journey was hushed and I was grateful that no one asked me anything because I was in no mood to answer anyone.
