Jasper had to declare, unsure on how to convince her to let him do what he needed, how to speak to her, how to understand her.
He did not know what he was to her. He was the child, he was the prisoner, he was the fountain of information. What was he to Lila, somebody who could not and would not, engage with him outside of fantasy?
"I know that you're not going to play outside, stupid. A man died in my old living room. You're going to go back home and get hurt, stupid," she vitriolically spat back at him.
"Is stupid the only insult you know?" slipped out of Jasper's mouth completely unbidden, as he inevitably messed up, as he always did under pressure.
