I preferred to go into a staring contest with an inanimate object that to look at Asher, who I might have consciously forgotten. A book on the shelf stood out, it was inconspicuously standing out among its peers; Jane Eyre. A classic I had gotten as a gift for my eighteenth birthday from Reene, thinking of my Reene my eyes began to tear up. I hadn’t contacted any one from home since and although it was barely twelve hours since I left, I could not help thinking of them.

New York was revealing itself to her, and she was falling in love with it, one street at a time. Throughout this period, Jane and Mike's letter exchange continued, growing richer and more intimate. Jane poured out her heart in her letters, sharing her deepest thoughts and feelings about the city, her work, her friends, everything but her love for Mike. And Mike, in turn, filled her in on every small detail of the town they had grown up in, their shared past, his life, everything but his feelings for her. It was a dance of words, a play of emotions, all within the confines of handwritten letters.

Next to it, placed purposefully at the center, was a single book. Its cover gleamed softly under the chandelier’s light. Deep emerald leather, trimmed in gold. The title: Pride and Prejudice. Emilia froze. She turned slowly back to Max, blinking. “Is this…?” He nodded. “A first edition. Signed by Jane Austen herself.” Her mouth parted, but no words came. “I ruined your original copy in high school,” Max continued. “Dropped it in the fountain during that stupid dare. You were furious.”

I stood to go sit beside Charles, stumbling a little as the carriage moved. “Be careful.” They both said simultaneously, as they brought their hands forward to hold me. “Thanks.” I smiled. I picked up a scroll, it contained a letter and it read; “My dear alpha, where have you been? I’ve missed your touch on my bo—” I coughed, unable to continue the next lines. My gaze went down to the bottom of the letter, it was written by some lady Danbury. Now I understood what Charles meant by, ‘for your ladies’.
