Joanna seemed pleased. "The Meridian never saw Catherine's death coming. I didn't either." A smile tugged at her lips. "But I'm not going to pretend I'm mourning her. The woman deserved exactly what she got."

The buzz of the city moved on without her, but inside her world, everything had slowed to a devastating crawl. She was at her father’s mansion now, tucked away behind guarded gates and heavy curtains. Not even the hotel penthouse she sometimes used felt safe enough. The only thing she wanted was distance—from the noise, from the headlines, from the heartbreak.
