I AM YOURS TO PLAY
I whispered, my voice shaky with fear, desperate, scanning the chaos.
People spilled out of Joe’s Diner—Joe, the owner, waitresses, regulars and even passers-by who had witnessed the incident—yelling, pointing, their voices a jumbled mess. I spotted him, crumpled against a dumpster, his black jacket severely burnt, blood trickling from his temple. He wasn’t moving, his chest barely rising, and my stomach dropped, guilt clawing at me. He’d come for me, left whatever mafia shit he was doing to save me, and I’d pushed him away, scared of the FBI’s eyes, of being labeled the gay agent fucking a mob boss.
