I gawp, like an imbecile, so taken by the sight that my breath catches in my throat. “This is amazing!” she says, and it’s all I can do to nod. An emerald and black butterfly takes lazy flight in front of us, its wings big and shimmering with metallic beauty. Laine frantically thumbs through the spotter guide, but I still her with a squeeze of my hand on her shoulder. “Papilio blumei,” I tell her. “Found only on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. It’s a peacock, otherwise known as a green swallowtail.” “It’s beautiful,” she says, and her eyes follow it out of sight.

There was a sudden loud crying sound and the air in the lab started to swirl. Everyone looked up to see that Becky had transformed into a beautiful but very scary looking butterfly creature. She had red and yellow skin and wings, and her eyes were glowing red as well. She looked as though she could either take you to new heights of beauty and passion, or she could rip your face off instead.

But there were still a lot more plants I couldn’t identify. I gasped, awestruck, gazing at the red butterfly. Its wings were as though made of thin slices of glowing red crystals with dark and gold patterns mixing gracefully with one another as it flapped its long-tailed wings. It was twice the size of a normal butterfly and a thousand times more beautiful and magical. The butterfly fluttered past the window glass. I waved at it excitedly, as though it would wave back at me. Unaware of how sheepishly I was smiling, I couldn’t take my eyes off it.

Unbeknownst to everyone, Millie was, in fact, Butterfly, who had disappeared for quite some time. In the upper right corner, the word "Butterfly" shone with a golden light, a unique label for her. At 15 or 16, she created designs she thought were beautiful and shared them online despite harsh criticism. She remained unfazed, as she was young and carefree. Soon after, a jewelry collection surged in popularity across the internet. She signed a contract with a company, emerging as the renowned designer known as Butterfly. The company promoted her extensively, and she dedicated herself tirelessly to her craft.

There, perfectly still against the pale bamboo, perched a single butterfly. Its wings were a deep, velvety black edged with iridescent blue, opening and closing slowly in the gentle morning light. It did not flutter or fly away. It simply waited, beautiful and unnaturally calm, as though watching her with silent, knowing patience. Eloise’s forced smile faded. A fresh chill traced down her spine. Even in daylight, the soul had found a new messenger.

But no answer comes back, only silence and the rustle of leaves. Confused, I scan the green expanse around me. “What butterfly?” I mutter, anxiety prickling beneath my skin. There isn’t one—at least, not yet. But then, as if summoned by my words, a shimmer appears in the air. Blue and silver light coalesces, swirling and folding itself into delicate wings. Suddenly, before me, a butterfly materializes, impossibly vivid, its colors gleaming like polished gemstones. It hovers a few feet away, its movements graceful and deliberate.

Shelley stands, gazing at her brother's frames, running her fingers over the glass which protects its bejewelled occupants. Captives? Prisoners? A tomb.... She reads the labels: Hesperiidae.... Lycaenidae.... Riodinidae.... Gossamer wings, some in metallic blues and golds, other copper or burnished orange, some almost transparent, others in a green which rivals the glorious eyes of the watcher. All rest there, neatly pinned, displayed, categorised and named. "Don't touch the frames, Shelley. You'll get fingerprints on the glass, then I'll have to clean them again."

The sound of that strange name drew my attention back to the group and what I saw next was nothing short of wondrous. Little Leah was still in Luna Malaya’s arms with Sarah and Julian right next to them, looking at Freya in wonder. And then there was Freya, who had been the person to utter those strange butterflies. Her hand was raised towards the baby’s face and suddenly, a bright blue smoke formed in her hands and as it rose, out came a beautiful blue butterfly, larger than any normal butterfly I had ever seen. A glittery dust came out of its wings that shore like diamonds in the light and it rose even higher, leaving behind a trail of glitter dust in its wave.
