But the vehicle had gone broken. He picked his mobile to call his family for help but both their phones were out of charge. How could everything happen all of a sudden? I got it. We watched as Jones walked to his car, a raised Hummer that screamed narcissistic personality disorder. He hefted his overweight body into the driver’s seat and churned the engine over, letting it roar to life. I sat back on my heels and watched him drive away, two dark Lycan shadows following him. I stood up and stretched. “Jones is gone for the night, and no one is guarding the grounds. Let’s move up the timetable and search his office. I have everything we’ll need. I brought it just in case.”

She continued to look down at the book, refusing to make eye contact. “How do you suppose your journal got there?” he asked. She looked him in the eye, doing her best to keep a straight face. “I was walking home last night, and I lost it somewhere. Maybe they found it.” He studied her. Finally, he said, “Maybe.” They stood there, in silence. “The weirdest thing of all,” he continued, “is that, before I went completely unconscious, I could have sworn I saw you there, standing over me, yelling at those guys to leave me alone….Isn’t that crazy?”

He was still alive. “It’s me! Let me in, quick!” She heard the keyhole slot move, then suddenly, several locks were unchained, and the door opened up. She and Sera quickly went inside, and he locked the door behind them. Caitlin and Jonah stared at each other, both stunned. Jonah, though, was much more shocked to see Caitlin standing there, with Sera, each holding weapons, each covered in blood. He was speechless. Caitlin quickly surveyed the apartment, and saw Jonah’s father lying on the couch, barely conscious. She saw the sores on his face, the tell-tale signs of plague. Her heart went out to him, and to Jonah. At least they were alive.

I carefully picked it up, my gloved hands trembling with anticipation. The journal belonged to the cannibal, a testament to his dark secrets, and possibly the key to unraveling the mystery that had consumed my every waking moment. Now that I knew of the author, it was time to see the content. I pulled over off the road and stopped the car. The visibility of the storm had increased, making it impossible for me to continue driving safely. So, instead, I opened the journal and started reading. My eyes skimmed the words, keeping in mind that I was potentially reading from the perspective of an unreliable narrator. And soon enough, I found myself enraptured by the scenes they were depicting.
