POV: Lyra Fear does not always arrive screaming. Sometimes it creeps in softly, disguised as routine. Sometimes it wears the shape of footsteps that pause too long, or eyes that linger where they should not. I felt it the morning after Nova confronted the Alpha. The forest was wrong.

But when I knocked on her door, there was no answer. “Novel?” I called out her name, but silence met me. Panic settled deep in my chest. Luckily, the door was unlocked. When I entered, the room was empty, and my heart hammered against my ribs, until I heard the water running in the bathroom. When I stepped inside, my breath caught in my throat. It was Novel. She looked lifeless, submerged beneath the water. Fear gripped me as I hauled her out. “Novel!” I barked. She opened her eyes, but they looked hollow, lifeless.

But there was something off when he finally crossed the borders. Not merely different, not the right kind of different but the sort that rests within the roughness of the skin and encroaches in itself. There were moments during the evening where this fear permeated the whole night. The wolves ran quickly in the streets, fast they ran, and their faces were grim with fatigue, and were full of care. Secret talks halted at his death and resumed in tremulous bits following him. Everyone looked tired. Everyone looked afraid. He didn’t slow down as he made his way toward the healing center.

I had spent my life believing I had burned it out of my system in the trenches of the borderlands, but as Risa took her first step into the silver vortex, I realized I had only been numb.
