Julien said nothing, but when I looked up he was looking at me with an expression I could not fully decode. It might have been curiosity. It might have been a concern. It might have been that he had noticed I was behaving strangely and was politely declining to say so. I sat up straight and ate my sandwich with dignity.

A storm of emotions churned behind his eyes, but the only words that made it out were, "It's been a while." I smiled. "It really has."
