"You are holding your head like it is very heavy." "I'm just thinking." "About what?" "Things," I said. Lucas accepted this and returned to his sandwich. Julien said nothing, but when I looked up he was looking at me with an expression I could not fully decode. It might have been curiosity. It might have been a concern. It might have been that he had noticed I was behaving strangely and was politely declining to say so. I sat up straight and ate my sandwich with dignity.

Please be negative. It had been several minutes since I took the test and yet, I still couldn’t bear to bring myself to look at the result. I just graduated from university and just started settling at work. I am barely managing to keep myself alive, let alone eat proper meals everyday. How could I possibly handle anything more?

Twenty if the gods were smiling? I sat down on the sofa, feeling the cheap springs groan under my weight, and scanned the QR code on the sticky table. A brightly coloured menu popped up on my phone. "Coffee," I whispered to myself. "I need a gallon of coffee. Intravenously, if possible."

A storm of emotions churned behind his eyes, but the only words that made it out were, "It's been a while." I smiled. "It really has."
