I push through the training room door, and the sight that greets me makes my heart clench painfully. Kaidora sits on a bench against the wall, Marcus crouched in front of her with a first aid kit. Her lip is still bleeding, split open and swollen. Bruises form across her cheek and jaw in shades of purple and blue. Her training shirt is torn at the shoulder, revealing more bruising beneath. But it's her eyes that destroy me— dull, haunted, like something inside her has dimmed. Marcus looks up when I enter, relief crossing his face. “Thank goddess. I was about to come find you.”

“But it's fine. We don't need him. He is a dick.” “Oh…” Keondra broke down again. “Why would he do this?” “Men are assholes.” Hilda patted her hair. “You're bigger than this, Kee.” Hilda quietly watched Keondra for the rest of the night.
