Cracking His Code
Chest tight, breath shorter, the certainty of it pressing down behind my sternum.
I kneel in front of him on the rug, between his feet, and I look up at him.

He laughs once, weakly. His hand finds my hair. His fingers are not steady.

He takes the box from me and balances it on his knee.
He looks at it for a long second. Then he undoes the small clasp and lifts the lid.
