Camerin stood over the spiral, Kate’s blouse nailed at its heart, his breath harsh in the stillness. He didn’t think. He acted.
With a snarl, he swung his blade down, cleaving through the blouse, the wood beneath it, the circle of bones scattering under the strike. The spiral shattered. Ash erupted into the air, acrid and stinging, the smell of burnt flesh and rot slamming into his lungs.
