I lit the candles again, setting the silver bowl in the center.
A few drops of blood slid from the fresh cut on my finger, staining the water crimson, and for a brief second, it glowed.
Just like before. But then again, shadows curled up the walls, not elegant or inviting, but jagged and wild, like claws trying to scrape free.
I leaned closer, whispering the words I’d been given, repeating it and repeating.
“Soon, Manny. You’ll love me. No one will take you away.”
The shadows shivered. They twisted until shapes began to form faces, maybe, eyes watching me, but then they slipped back into nothing, leaving me scared.
