He looked so determined. I blinked again. The scenery changed into that of an underground lab. Rusty equipment was everywhere, and the roof was leaking with rainwater. The entire room smelled foul and rats were running on every corner. There was one small bed on one side, a bucket, a cupboard, and a large table in the middle of the room with a lot of equipment. They looked like an engineering lab, with wrenches, bolts, and screwdrivers of various sizes. I saw some small prototypes of air balloons on the table.

The two women reluctantly agreed. Number one lab was a huge windowless room. All the spaces and three room length benches were taken up by literally hundreds of cages of all types – some of a sealed-glass construction with their own private air-conditioning and filtration units, but most of the standard open mesh type. Hundreds of pairs of eyes, mostly small, red and beady, turned to stare at us as we entered. There must have been between fifteen hundred and two thousand animals in that room altogether – mostly mice, ninety per cent of them mice, I should have guessed, but also about a hundred rabbits and the same of guinea pigs. From what I could see they all seemed in good health.

He heard the sound of other people. The young man raised his head and craned his head to the side, listening to the sound of the shoes clicking against the concrete floor. “Shit…” With tears still rolling down his cheek, he fled from the scene and went deeper into the secluded area that was only restricted to Potential Lab Rats like them. Lab Rats and other normal people were not allowed to enter certain places while Potential Lab Rats were granted permission to enter almost all rooms except the separate building that was clearly owned by Boss.

They split up, with Lyra going into the east wing and Julian going west. During her search, Lyra found herself in a huge laboratory. Walls on one side of the room were covered by shelves filled with jars filled with all sorts of liquids, bones, and plants. Other shelves held books. On the other side were cages holding various types of animals, from rats to snakes. A huge fridge in the room contained cases and cases of test tubes containing different coloured liquids. Lyra guessed that they may be poisons. Hearing noise beyond a door in the far wall, Lyra moved towards it.

I opened the elevator doors, and the groups began to fill the cars. “Take us down,” Grey's voice boomed, and I shut the doors and brought all the cars to the underground levels. “Two minutes!” Lanzo roared as they ran toward the laboratory. My breath became labored. The tiny red dots on the exploding devices kept flashing, reminding us of the threat and the limited time. “The entrance is behind the cabinet on the left!” I shouted, and a few soldiers began to push the metal shelves until the large hatch appeared. “Ninety seconds!”

“What is the end of everything?” I looked back at the door and the keypad. I walked over to the keypad and punched in 9-5-0-2-1-7. There was a slight pause and then a click. I opened the door and walked into the next room. There was a tablet on a table and the door swung shut behind me. I walked up to the tablet and touched it. “Good evening, Kai, you have 20 minutes to solve the riddles and escape this room.”

“Listen, I have a job for you. A way to get out of here. To go back to our parents. Do you want to hear it?” She bit her lip, and her face turned into an ugly shade of purple. “Yesterday, two guys tried to escape, and they were caught and thrown in the isolation cells. It is said that the cell is filled with heaters that will make you lose your mind; it’s like the inside of an oven.” She said in a scary tone. “Forget it; there is no way out of this lab. You will only get caught.” “You haven’t even heard my plan yet.” He lamented.
