Then she wailed in pain, for the hand she’d stitched a grid into was gone, and rats were pouring out from her wrist. It was instant madness. Rats were everywhere, crawling from all sides of the circle, across the floor, digging through books. They all had oversized, all-too-human grins. They went straight for Mr. Pervis, nipping at his ears and fingers. He brushed them away, stomped them with his boots, squished them in his fists. All the while, Loretta wailed in pain.

“You mean one of these could be that passage book?” “Yes. And Ruin used one of those passage books to enter the place where they were preparing the people for experiments. That’s where I found Ash with the others, so I can guarantee you, it’s real,” I said, reopening the book that I was examining before. “But there were many people. When I say many, I mean almost thirty percent were there of their own free will.” “What? Why would someone go and become a lab rat on will?” I shrugged. “Money? Power? Some sort of self-sacrificial preaching? They are getting something out of it. Some benefit from the experiments. That is why they were there.”

Ryan stopped and looked at the subject on the desk. The rat started to move from side to side, making horrible sounds. His tiny eyes swelled, becoming bigger and bigger. The same thing happened to its belly and tiny legs. It swelled and its color morphed into crimson.

The surrounding researchers returned to their work, treating Natasha as if she were invisible. After a long time, Natasha placed the lab rat in the observation box and carefully recorded various observations. Then, she handed the data sheet to Ronald. "Take a look." Ronald gave her a scornful smile. "So persistent. Your proportions are wrong. No matter what, it will be a failure." As he spoke, he looked down at the data sheet in his hands. The two women reluctantly agreed. Number one lab was a huge windowless room. All the spaces and three room length benches were taken up by literally hundreds of cages of all types – some of a sealed-glass construction with their own private air-conditioning and filtration units, but most of the standard open mesh type. Hundreds of pairs of eyes, mostly small, red and beady, turned to stare at us as we entered. There must have been between fifteen hundred and two thousand animals in that room altogether – mostly mice, ninety per cent of them mice, I should have guessed, but also about a hundred rabbits and the same of guinea pigs. From what I could see they all seemed in good health.

He had a flashback to these two lab rats. They were the ones Helma had scratched off the roster. Officially, they were goners. Reality painted a different picture; these two were in tip-top shape, taking to the meds like ducks to water. They had not shown any signs of kicking up a fuss during the trials, and the Glacier toxin was on the down low.
