Luna Anita, seated in her high-backed chair, turned her cold, unreadable gaze on the girl standing before her. Amara trembled under her scrutiny, her heart racing with guilt and fear. For a moment, Luna Anita simply studied her. It struck her then—she hadn’t truly taken the time to look at Amara, the girl she’d taken in as an infant. Now standing before her was not the child she had raised, but a young woman of remarkable beauty.

Lana I had been walking for a while now. I halted on my steps and took one look behind me. I saw nothing but an empty road. No towering gates, no guards. No King’s Estate. Good.
