Slipping out of the room, I made my way toward the garden, my feet carrying me quickly down the hallway and out into the fresh air. The garden was bathed in morning light, the sky clear and bright. A few pack members were scattered around. They were chatting quietly. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself as the cool air filled my lungs. I felt some of the tension leave my shoulders, but the questions in my mind still swirled with an intensity I couldn’t ignore. “Luna,” a voice broke through my thoughts. I turned to see a young woman, one of the pack members, bowing respectfully. “Is there anything we can do for you?”

Mara wouldn’t be likely to find me here, at least not right away, giving me a little time to read unbothered. I settled down, brushing the leaves and pine needles off the bench, then opened the book on my lap and continued to read where I had left off last night. The chapter on documented reincarnation accounts was dense and slow-going in places, and a lot of it still didn’t apply to my situation in any direct way. But I kept reading, skimming over the sections that seem irrelevant. I was about three quarters of the way through the chapter when I turned the page and found the heading: “The Lycan Princess and the Throne of Ashmoore.”

Luna Anita, seated in her high-backed chair, turned her cold, unreadable gaze on the girl standing before her. Amara trembled under her scrutiny, her heart racing with guilt and fear. Lana I had been walking for a while now. I halted on my steps and took one look behind me. I saw nothing but an empty road. No towering gates, no guards. No King’s Estate. Good. I turned around and kept walking, my boots crunching over the dry path as I pushed through the dark road ahead. I hadn't walked all the way from the Estate on foot. I had stolen a car— well… borrowed it temporarily but I decided to ditch it for it could be tracked.

My face was bubbling with smiles, unable to hold my excitement I hurriedly went to meet her and took a seat next to her. "Guess what?!" I squealed, suppressing the laughter threatening to tear out my lips. She didn't even look at me, “come on, guess.” I tapped her leg and she turned to glare at me. Still, I nudged her, unbothered by her reaction. Uninterested, she mumbled, “Calyx is going to be the next alpha in a couple of days, which automatically means you will become the new Luna.” “Yes!!” I screamed. “But how did you know?” I asked, surprised she already knew.

I pleaded, as I could no longer bear this pain. Today was meant to be my happy day—my birthday, not my misery day. “It’s real, Katie. It’s really Dolf, and you have to listen to him. Listen to what he and Davien have to say to you—" My mom started saying. But the boy from Black Fur cut in with wide eyes, “I need answers too, Luna Queen. What’s going on? I hear these voices, and this feeling is—Oh, dear goddess! She can’t be my mate. She has a mate already.”

“Because we won’t let him.” Lana’s POV The door opens up and my body stiffens. I don’t see anyone, just shadows shifting. But I hear it. The slow sound of footsteps approaching. I swallow hard. I can hear my pulse pounding in my ears. “Who’s there?” I call out. But there is only silence. I am afraid. The footsteps continue. Whoever it is, they’re not in a rush. They know I have nowhere to go. And then I see him. Luca.

“We are leaving. You can walk out on your own, or security can escort you. That’s your decision to make.” Her expression twisted with fury. “How dare you,” she spat. “Just who the hell do you think you are?” “I’m your Luna,” I snapped, my voice edged with a growl. “And you will treat me like it.” Rage flickered in her eyes, but she swallowed whatever words she wanted to hurl at me. With a sharp inhale, she shoved past me and stormed toward the staircase, heels clicking furiously against the floor. I watched her go, feeling an odd sort of numbness settle over me.

I didn't know what game he and Montanne were playing at, but I knew she didn't deserve to be a pawn in it.
