Her lips curled further as she turned to her maids, clapping her hands. "Laugh."
The maids hesitated.
Ellie narrowed her eyes. "I said, laugh."
One by one, they forced themselves to chuckle, the sound awkward and dry at first. But Ellie wasn’t satisfied.
"No, no, no. Laugh like your life depends on it. Laugh like the world has given you the greatest gift!"
And so they did. They laughed and laughed, hollow and forced, but Ellie didn’t care. She threw her head back, joining in. The laughter bubbled out of her like a broken melody, growing louder, more hysterical, until tears streamed down her face.
