Jax put two bullets in the first one’s head without slowing down. The shots sound echoed through the empty halls to the empty world. Then a smell hit them immediately: old blood, piss, and rotting meat. They moved down the corridors, flashlights cutting through the dark. Most rooms had been trashed already. Empty beds, broken IV stands, dried shit on the floors. Jax’s group split up. He took the stairs down to the lower levels with two of his guys, Rico and Tank.

It scurries across the floor for a bit before the infected reaches out and grabs it. Biting down and ripping out a chunk of meat, it starts to eat. "Stay here," I whisper, carefully getting up. Getting up to my knees, I stay low and peek over the trashcan. The infected is facing us, but it's looking down, completely focus on the rat in its hand. Checking to make sure it really is alone, I move fast, running out from behind cover. The infected looking up as it hears my footsteps, I tackle it to the ground, wrapping my arms around its waist.

In that second, I prayed she'd put a bullet in my skull right there. I was tired. Tired of this godforsaken mission. I just wanted to go home. She laughed, reading my mind like a book. "Wanna die? Too bad. System rules are clear: every year you stay alive post-failure, your real body stays comatose. And I get every scrap of your 21 years of mission progress to lock in my win." She leaned in, hissing in my ear, venom sharp as a switchblade. "Don't blame me. These four made men won't fall irrevocably in love with me. Not with you around. Swallow your data, and I'm home free."

They carried in eight dead bodies. The driver of the closest ambulance noticed me and yelled, “What are you doing here?
