After I get back to what I was doing so I’ll be able to get back to the house before noon to take the girls out to see Marius Cravean. The entire room seemed to wait for the answer to a question Leah did not understand. Draw birds. Olivia’s note. The little girl’s drawing from Westbridge. The bird that looked nothing like a bird and still mattered enough to sit inside the tin box. Had Olivia drawn birds? At fifteen? At Ashbourne’s party? With Celia? Leah had no memory to borrow. Levi quickly circled the couch and scooped the paper, pencil, and binder from the ground. "I didn’t mean to startle you," Levi commented, placing the materials back on Doriane's lap. "That's incredible. Where did you learn to draw?"

I didn't know if it was the weather, but I was unusually aroused lately, and I’ve been too sensitive especially around Levi. It was very strange. Or maybe it was because I’ve been hidden in my room for so long. We never know. “By the way, I finished the drawing,” Levi said and ran to look for something. He came back with a large frame. “Close your eyes!” “Childish,” I rolled my eyes. “Come on! Close your eyes!” I sighed and did as he said. I closed my eyes for a moment until he asked me to open them. Oh. It was the first time I saw a drawing of myself. I was surprised because it was well painted. Every feature, every flaw, and every detail was perfectly drawn on the canvas.

A minute later Keyla heard cupboard doors opening in the kitchen. Leo, at the table with paper and crayons, was drawing something he'd been working on since breakfast. Three figures in a house — the same round heads and stick bodies he always used, circles for heads, lines for bodies, and a square structure around them with a door. He'd labeled none of them, which was unusual; Usually there would already be letters beside each figure. Something seemed to occur to him. He switched crayons and went back to the drawing. Only then did Keyla look away from the contract. She leaned slightly toward the drawing. "Who's that?"

Levi sat at his desk, reviewing the final Q4 projections on his screen, numbers blurring slightly after a long day of back-to-back meetings. I’d sit outside after school and draw whatever I could see. Trees, birds, and rooftops. Leo arrived soon after, bouncing into the room with his usual energy, carrying a small stack of drawings. “Mama! Papa! Look at what I made!” he exclaimed. I knelt to examine the pictures, boats, castles, suns, and small stick figures holding hands. My chest warmed at the sight. “They’re beautiful, Leo. You’ve done a wonderful job.”
