The struggle and realization of a vain reality, of what we presumed our life to be. This book will be deep, dark and sensually erotic.

He lives by the book. But when he finds his mate in the girl that uses that book as a paperweight on her obnoxiously cluttered shelf, he finds his life of perfect peace and structure blown into bits and scattered like the confetti he can picture her dancing in. She used to write about kindness in the journal she carried everywhere. Whenever life became overwhelming, I'd open one of those pages and remind myself that good people still existed. Standing here now... I was beginning to believe it again. "Aya?" Jamey's sleepy voice floated through the hallway. "In here!" A few seconds later, my younger brother wandered inside without looking where he was going, his nose buried inside a thick book. "Pancakes," he muttered automatically. Then his foot slammed into one of the stools. "Ouch." He looked up.

What came after. The letters and the yellow nursery and the Tuesday morning proposal and the ice and the building of something from the wreckage. The choice and the daily choosing and what it looked like from the inside of a life that had been built deliberately rather than fallen into. The specific texture of being inside a good life that had cost something to get to and was better for the cost. The three chapters were the damage. The book needed to be the whole thing. I sat at the table for a while.

“But the world will always test those who live in it. Remember, the Archive may wait for another thread, another witness. But we have learned to resist.” Emma inhaled deeply, filling her lungs with air that tasted of rain, dust, and freedom. For the first time in months, she allowed herself to feel the fragility and beauty of the ordinary. Life wasn’t perfect. Life wasn’t eternal. But it was alive. Messy. Terrifying. And it was hers.

“For making my house smell like rotting plants? For forcing me to drink God-knows-what every single day? For making me feel like I am losing my sanity?” Lucy sighed, rolling her eyes slightly, as if Maya were nothing more than a dramatic child throwing a tantrum. “You’re exaggerating,” she said with that same infuriating calmness. “The house isn’t that messy. You young people are just too accustomed to sterile, lifeless spaces. A home should have character. It should be full of life, full of culture. You act as if a few books out of place and a few herbs drying in the air is a disaster.”

Just the truth said aloud. I swallowed, let my fork drop against the empty plate, the tart long forgotten in the shadow of what his words stirred in me. “I don’t know what I feel anymore,” I said. “I think I stopped trying to label it the moment everything got… messy.” Alessandro chuckled, not unkindly. “Messy is where the truth lives, Sarah. People pretend love is clean, but it’s not. It’s chaotic. Loud. Unforgiving. Beautiful. And painfully human.”
