What a man. I laid my phone down beside me. I had lunch just a couple of hours before, but my stomach was already rumbling. The food here was pretty good; especially to be “hospital food.” Only problem was there wasn't enough of it. I was so damn hungry. I picked up the remote and surfed through various channels showing mostly reruns of shows I'd already seen thousands of times. I lay there staring pointlessly at the television that refused to please me.

“I really can’t Leah, I’m sorry it wouldn’t be safe for you out here, it would be to overwhelming for you.” She nodded her head like she understood as she slowly sat back on the couch. “Here, these are instant noodles and cookies, it’s not very nutritional, but honestly, they’re delicious after you’ve been drunk.” I knew she didn’t know what that meant but she took it from my hands sitting it in-front of her on the coffee table. I turned on the tv putting it on some old re runs of the bad girls club. It probably wasn’t the most appropriate but I thought, hey maybe some new, crazy scenery was a good change. I hoped.

THREE WEEKS LATER. It was a Saturday morning. I sat on my couch, giggling and chuckling, my gaze focused on the TV. As I watched my favourite reality shows. I placed my hand on my tummy, because it was grumbling. Obviously I was starving. It was past ten Am and I hadn't had breakfast. I picked up the remote control, pressing the power off buttton. I honestly didn't want to quit the show, but at the same time I needed to eat.

"And what did you have for lunch?" "Miss Constance made the mac-and-cheese with the little round hot dogs!" she shouted, bouncing on the cushion. "And I ate all of it, even the little broccoli trees. And then I watched the cartoon with the puppy dogs that fly in helicopters, but then the TV went off because it was bath time."

I plated everything, taking my own portion to the living room while leaving his covered on the dining table. I settled onto the couch with my plate, remote in hand, flipping through channels until I found a light comedy show to watch. Anything to make the day feel a little less crazy, more normalcy. I kept eating, the fork pausing mid-air whenever a funny line hit, small chuckles escaping me despite the knot in my chest. About thirty minutes into the show, my phone buzzed on the cushion beside me. I picked it up absentmindedly, expecting a text from Maya to check if I’ve gotten home safely.

"What?" She pointed her pinky finger towards the television while putting her fist over her lips. "Do you want to eat that?" She nodded her head vigorously like a kid. "Are you serious?" Her expressions changed from cute to serious in a second. "You had your dinner at 8:00 PM, then you ate again at 11:00 PM. For the last hour, you are eating popcorn and you are still hungry!" She looked at me with rage in her eyes.

She turned on the television and found a rerun of Murder She Wrote and began to have supper. This was a nightly ritual, though aspects of it changed. Sometimes her frozen meal was lasagna, other times macaroni and cheese, still other times beef stroganoff. The television program varied, depending on what was on, but it was typically some rerun, since she didn’t find most modern shows appealing. If not Murder She Wrote, then Touched By an Angel or Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman. An old sitcom like I Love Lucy or The Andy Griffith Show would do in a pinch. She’d watch until she finished her meal and then she’d resume reading. This she would do until she was ready for bed.

I said into the mouthpiece. "Hi, Olivia. We are twenty minutes away from your house. Are you ready?" Vera asked sounding excited. "Yes," I replied and managed a smile. "See you in a couple of minutes," Vera said and ended the call. I went downstairs and found Chantel. She was ready with my morning drink. I picked it up from the tray and began to sip it. It was peppermint tea. I sipped the tea and made my way to the living room. I sat down and turned on the TV and started browsing through the channels. I found my favourite channel.
