I wake up drenched in sweat, my heart feeling like I had just run a marathon as I blink, adjusting to the soft light that painted the room. Turning to face the bedside clock, I sigh in frustration, seeing as it was only just 3am and the nightmares had refused to let me get any more rest. Just like my first night here, every overthought conversation, interaction, and the worry of impending doom managed to morph into monsters that came back for me in my dreams.

“It’s okay, buddy. You’re safe. It was just a dream.” “But what if it wasn’t a dream? What if Mia really can’t hear me calling for her?” I pulled Ivan into my lap, feeling how his small body shook against mine. These nightmares were getting worse, not better, and his distress went far beyond normal childhood fears. “Ivan, tell me about the dream.” “We were in a big dark place, like a forest, and I could hear Mia crying somewhere but I couldn’t see her. I kept yelling ‘I’m sorry! I’m sorry!’ but she couldn’t hear me because the wind was too loud.”

Chapter 35 - Desperate The last few days felt like months as worry ate away at me. I didn’t sleep often, but I woke up covered in sweat and gasping for air when I did manage to pass out. Other twisted nightmares would come into play each time I passed back out. Ones where Balthazar was dead, and I was too late to help him. Others where, Jade never came, and the giants found us instead. One nightmare would morph into the next. It would go from him to me being alone cornered by Luecrottas beast. I was being eaten alive while my screams went unheard. They swirled around each other, going back and forth.

A small chuckle escaped me and I looked up at him. “I guess that is why it’s called a nightmare. Night terrors often feel incredibly realistic.” I could still feel the remnants of fear lingering in my mind, as if the dream had embedded itself into my thoughts. The more I tried to shake it off, the stronger its grip on me became.
