“About you, Jax.” That threw me off. “Me?” She tilted her head slightly. “You carry ghosts.” The words hit harder than I wanted them to. “Everyone does.” “Not like you.” I looked away, focusing on the herbs again. “You don’t know me.” “Not yet,” she said softly. “But I’ve read enough to know what kind of men haunt stories like yours.” “What kind of men is that?” “The ones who live when others don’t.” I froze, staring at the table. My hands had gone still, a few stray leaves sticking to my palms.

The conqueror had won by inventing a game where victory meant no one else had to lose. Dr. Sharma walked away, her notebook full of facts, her mind full of a silence that was not empty, but profound. She would write her book. It would be a book about a ghost who had haunted the world into waking up. And the ghost, she knew, would have hated every page. Which was, perhaps, the final proof that he had succeeded.

I breathed, my heart hammering against my chest like a trapped bird. I turned back to find Nyra and Vivianne hovering close, their faces etched with confusion. Nyra tilted her head, her brow furrowing as she studied my pale face. "What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Did you see something?" I shook my head, my hands trembling slightly as I clutched my bag. Livia wasn't dead, so she couldn't be a ghost, but the thought brought no comfort. The feeling of her eyes on me was still searing into my skin.

But strangely, when the ghosts saw me, they all froze. "On you…" a young man in a worn painter's smock said, staring at me in shock. "Is that Kael's aura?" "And little Lily's," said a ghost who looked like a sculptor. "And Pops's, too." The middle-aged man's face changed. "Impossible! Why would they accept a human?" I walked over to a bookshelf in the corner of the room and found a thick diary. I opened it to the first page and saw the words:

“How poetic.” “What do you want?” Her eyes flicked toward the pack house. “Only to warn you. They’re whispering again. Some say Zac’s spirit still lingers. That he’s… watching.” I felt the blood drain from my face. “Don’t start this.” “I’m not starting anything,” she said, stepping closer. “You’re the one pretending ghosts don’t follow you.” “There are no ghosts,” I said firmly. Her smirk deepened. “Maybe. But you and I both know some sins don’t die easy.”

I am so curious of trying to read the title of the book I just took from the bench that I did not notice him going inside the room. Is he a ghost? Why did he turn up suddenly? I am so startled of his presence that I let go of the book and it fell with an echoing thud. His words continuously ringing on my ear as I gawk, “What the fuck?" Oh, what does that mean?

“THAT MAKES IT WORSE.” I grab a broom. “Fine.
