Watching. Curious. “Alpha?” one of the sentinels asked quietly. “Stay sharp,” I said. “No escalation.” I shifted direction, moving toward the edge of the compound alone. Valir stirred, muscles coiling beneath my skin, ready if needed. As I reached the boundary line, I spotted the figure standing just beyond the trees. A wolf. Older. Scarred. Rogue. He raised his hands slowly, palms open. “Didn’t come to fight,” he called. “Just to talk.”

“Fine. Whatever.” Damon stalked over in three pissed-off strides and stopped so close I could feel the heat pouring off his bare chest. Pine. Smoke. That sharp alpha smell that always made my heart do a clumsy, embarrassing somersault. He looked down at me, voice dropping so low it felt like a secret meant just for my ears. “Stop being scared of your own damn wolf. Show me.” “I don’t even know how to make the stupid thing behave,” I muttered, staring at the fast thump-thump in his throat because looking up into his eyes felt like stepping in front of a moving truck.

It is a good thing that he has two sides, because he has promised me the same thing. So it is for him, to honor his gift, that I find myself just outside of the Alpha’s house, standing above a mound of dirt covered in large river stones. I hate being this deep into wolf territory, especially without any spells prepared. They have already gotten a good whiff of me, so it wouldn’t take much for them to scent me and find me. Thankfully, I’m going to the one place I am certain they will not want to be. A quiet spot just beyond the tree line, far from the river but near enough to watch.

Losing a pack member takes more of a toll on an Alpha than gaining one does so I would assume it will take him a few more minutes to get the strength to shift. I have to strike now while I have the chance. Shifting into my large black wolf, I lunged into the fight, swiping and tearing at every rogue that crossed my path. I was close enough to see the smirk on Hunters face, when my vision went blurry.

Guided by the hushed whisper of the wind and the soft crunch of leaves beneath their feet, the group advanced through the mountain, each step deliberate and vigilant. The night seemed to hold secrets, its embrace both eerie and enchanting, as if nature itself was privy to their quest. Amidst the shadows and the symphony of night sounds, Alpha William's senses heightened. His wolf sight, a gift inherited from his ancestors, enabled him to pierce through the darkness, revealing the intricate patterns of the forest. As his gaze swept over the ground, it caught upon a glint of something unusual – a talisman, lying alone and forgotten.

The trees thin and soon I can see the edge of the forest. The wolf stops and crouches down. I painfully slide off his back, using a nearby tree to support myself as I cover my eyes. “You can open your eyes now,” he chuckles after a few minutes. I lower my hand to see him standing in front of me wearing only a pair of shorts. “Come on,” he says, jerking his head towards the end of the forest. I only make it a single step before my leg gives out. He catches me and scoops me up into his arms. “Let’s make sure you get to the Alpha in one piece okay?”

Alone again, he stood in the clearing, the dark energy around him pulsating faintly. “The Alpha,” he muttered, his voice carrying a venomous edge. “And his precious little sanctuary. Let’s see how long it lasts.” The shadows seemed to deepen around him as Malrik stepped into the forest, his figure vanishing like a wraith into the night. Somewhere in the distance, the howl of a wolf rang out again—not a cry of despair this time, but a harbinger of the storm to come.

It was in a state of disrepair: weathered and partially collapsed, but solid enough to be stationed fifteen feet in the air with a ladder that could be pulled up after me. I was able to crawl up as fast as my wounds permitted, the weakness of the blood loss and fatigue causing my hands to tremble. It was right when I stepped onto the platform that I saw them – yellow eyes flashing in the darkening light, no less than six wolves stepping out of the bush with a hunter's stare. The ladder was raised with a rusty screech as the alpha cannoned towards the place where I was seconds ago standing. His snarl of fury reverberated through the forest as he crashed down to the forest floor below.

And it makes everything so much more amazing. While looking out on the lake and the river, I sense the change in Skye, who seems to be getting excited, and the sound of the forest going quiet. I stand up and look into the trees when I see them. The big midnight black wolf that I thought I saw the day we arrived. He is slowly coming out from the trees as if he is trying not to scare us. His scent tells me who it is. This huge wolf is Alpha Logan. He stops up and looks around me. Then turn to go look at some big rocks and disappear behind them. A few seconds later, Alpha Logan comes out from behind the rocks dressed in a pair of shorts.
