I whispered to myself, confused as to what had happened. Whisper? I had lost my voice in the fire due to smoke inhalation. I was told that I would never get it back as they were destroyed beyond repair. The voice I had maintained and conditioned daily had disappeared in a snap, leaving behind a gravelly hoarse groan which sounded as if it came right out of a zombie apocalypse movie. Apart from that, I couldn't utter a peep.

For some reason it seems so familiar, and I know I need to find this voice. It will give me answers to all the unknown questions that I have. I hope it can tell me who I am and what I have lost. Suddenly as I run the fog begins to thin. Panting with heavy breath I make myself run faster toward the sound of that beautiful voice. I have been stuck here for so long in the quiet of the fog that I suddenly feel excitement to meet someone, anyone.

“No, I won’t give up.” The voice felt so familiar, almost like home. “Stop fighting,” the voice repeated gently. “You can’t win this way.” “I have to fight,” I said desperately. “I can’t just give up.” “Sooner or later, you will lose,” the voice whispered. “You’re losing yourself more and more. You’re giving yourself no hope of coming back. The smart thing to do is give up now and regroup. When the time comes and you’re stronger, you can fight back properly. But if you keep fighting like this, there will be nothing left of you to save.”

Didn’t have the space. Didn’t have the heart. The music swelled again. Familiar lyrics. Familiar pain. Her ex’s voice filled her ears once more. And just like that— Everything else disappeared. Lightsticks beamed brightly in the darkness, flooding the space with vibrant hues. "Silence speaks for those who listen." Kyle's magnetic voice came through as he jumped down the swing. Hannah strangled me and then she comforted me that night. "She was there alright. But I drank a lot of alcohol and pills that day Cassie. I must have been hallucinating. I felt so guilty about what happened to her. I must have hurt myself. I don't know...I still love her..." I said tears streaming from my eyes as my back is turned away from her. "But...But it doesn't matter, I have you and I love you, Cassidy. Hannah is gone now and all we can do is move forward. When I started to accept that, the voices have stopped and I don't see her anymore." I lied, because deep down I know, I swear to God whenever I look at Cassidy I see Hannah. I whispered to the empty air. “My Althea… Please… don’t lose yourself.” But the truth was sharp, merciless. She already had.

With or without a voice, I will be heard. I pace the floor slowly, barefoot, the blade never leaving my grip. My reflection in the window is pale and strange, like a ghost staring back at me with hollow eyes. I almost don’t recognize her. When did I become this version of myself—this sleepless, dagger-clutching queen who trusts no one? Maybe it started the day I lost my voice. Or maybe the moment I started pretending I could forgive. Either way, there’s no going back now. There’s only forward. Forward into the smoke, through the lies, to the truth that waits at the center of this war.
