Ares helped me mount, his hands lingering on my waist a moment longer than necessary.
"Last chance to change your mind," he said quietly.
I looked up at the keep, at the window of our chambers where our children slept. Then I looked at Perla, sitting straight-backed on her white mare, waiting.
"No," I said. "I need to do this. I need to know."
"Then let's go meet your father."

We left the keep behind, riding through territories I'd never seen before. Perla led us away from the main roads, taking narrow paths through dense forest where the trees grew so close together that sunlight barely reached the ground.
