“Hello?”
“Carol,” Evelyn said quickly. “Is—are you okay? Is something wrong?”
There was a pause. Then a tired laugh, soft and uneven.
“I had a little accident,” Carol said. “But I’m fine now. Lorenzo helped me.”
Lorenzo?
“What?”
“Oh,” Carol’s voice lifted, casual—almost teasing. “You didn’t know? He was here last night.”
Evelyn’s mouth went dry. “No. I didn’t.”
“Someone broke into my house,” Carol continued, and now there was a tiny trace of smugness under her words, like poison wrapped in silk. “I called him. He came. He helped. Stayed with me.”
