A mechanical voice pierced the quiet room: "Motion detected in back garden."
"What on earth is that?" Norma asked, startled, her arms instinctively tightening protectively around the baby.
"Probably just a fox triggering the perimeter sensors," Hugo replied nonchalantly, not looking up from the evening newspaper. "They get brave when it’s cold."
Suddenly, there was a loud, violent crash from the rear of the house, followed by the heavy, unmistakable bang of a door being forced open.
Hugo dropped his newspaper instantly, his face draining of colour. He stood up, reaching for the heavy brass poker resting beside the fireplace.
