Lucien added, his tone leaving no room for question. “And tell them if they return with nothing-” he paused, a flicker of something cold passing through his eyes. “-they will keep searching until they do or I shall have them beheaded.” When the aide departed, Lucien’s office seemed quieter than before. *** He rose from his chair and moved toward the bookshelf lining the far wall. His fingers brushed over worn spines until they found the one he sought, a volume bound in black leather, its title long faded. Opening it revealed not pages of text, but hidden compartments, each holding documents far older than Cassian.

The man said and pointed to a chair opposite him and Lucian sat down. "How have you been?" The man asked Lucian standing up. Lucian replied that he was fine. The man walked around to the other side of the library and took out some books from a section of the shelf and dipped his hand in the empty section pulling out a drawer. . . . …..

“I’m so glad we’re finally together after everything.” “I’m glad too,” he said, his lips curving into a small smile. I hesitated for a moment, then looked up at him. “Lucian, did you ever read the rules in that book?” He frowned slightly and shook his head. “No, not yet. Why?” “Oh, heaven,” I whispered. “Lucian, the things in there are terrible. They talk about me having to submit to you completely, about me not being allowed to share your room unless you say so.”

Curious, I reach for it and brush it off. "Ooh," I gasp. It's not a book about werewolves. It's a hunter’s manual. Frowning, I flip through the pages and notice it’s is filled with gruesome details of how to hunt werewolves, how to kill them, and how to torture them. I glance up at Lucian, arching my brow. "Why would your parents have a book about werewolf hunters?" I ask, thumbing through more of the horrifying pages. Lucian lifts his head briefly to look at me, then lowers it back down to the stack of papers he’s sifting through.

This man, who had accompanied the mayor to meetings and councils, was in his grand mansion doing something that required great concentration. But it was because things were happening in the town that he didn't like. So, before everything went out of his plans, he started reading from some books. He was in the library and closed his eyes after reading a few paragraphs. A kind of tingling air began to emanate from his hands, gradually filling the room, and then escaping through the window. After expelling that air from his hands, Lucian fell to the ground from exhaustion. But he knew that now he had nothing to fear, at least for now.

“That’s not even the right genre.” I glanced at the side of the book, my eyes scanning the words I couldn’t read. I looked up and tried to find words that resembled this one. Lucian stepped closer to me. He pointed at the word in the book. “What does that say?” He asked, his tone low and non-judging, but it felt the opposite. “What is this, a test?” I asked, letting out a humorless laugh. “It’s a question.” I stared at the word he was pointing at, my lips eager to move, but no words came out.

Every step carried them closer to the heart of Lucian’s power. And then they saw it. A clearing, ringed with stones carved in the language of the old gods. At its center, a pool of black water shimmered in the moonlight—Lucian’s fount of corruption. And there, clad in armor wrought of bone and shadow, Lucian himself waited. “Selene,” he said, his voice like silk over a blade. “So good of you to come.” She stepped forward, her blade drawn. “I didn’t come to talk, Lucian.”
