He was still in his suit pants and dress shirt, though the tie was gone and the top buttons were undone. He looked exhausted. His hair was messy, as if he had been running his hands through it.

Then, softening, I added, “And let’s talk battle plans.” That caught his attention. His brows furrowed. “Battle? Against who?” “Lucien,” I said, leaning back. “I’ve had a spy inside his castle. She brought me news, his walls are weak, his men starved, his defenses crumbling. If we strike now, he’ll be finished.”

I gave her an icy-cold stare and bared my teeth, "Lucien doesn't love you, Asteria. At least not anymore. Now, he has got some other agenda and he is obsessed with all these crazy and vile ideas of destroying the world." Her head shook vigorously in denial. Her voice broke as she stammered, "No...no...that can't...be...he..." I took a step toward her and hissed out, feeling no mercy on her, "You are nothing but a pawn in his game of chess, Asteria. He made a fool of you because he is nothing without your powers." My eyebrows furrowed down as I asked her pitifully, "Do you even know about the secret biolab Lucien and Stella had built here? Right in this castle?"

Not a hesitant, polite knock—more of a you’re going to open this door now kind of knock. I already knew who it was. Lucien didn’t wait for my invitation. He stepped inside, all sharp edges and colder-than-midnight elegance, closing the door behind him with a soft click. “Is there a reason you’re wandering the castle at this hour?” I asked, trying to sound casual, though my pulse quickened. His eyes—those molten gold flecked with crimson—met mine with unnerving steadiness. “You’ve been… distracted.” I arched a brow. “By?”
