I said quietly back, “because I am.”
Slowly, Maeve stepped forward. Not aggressively, just… weighted. Intent. She pushed her hand between us, fingers curled in as though she were holding something small and delicate.
“I’m not going to lecture you,” she grated. “Trust me, I know when to keep my mouth shut about things that aren’t my business.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Then what the hell are you doing?”
Maeve unfurled her fingers.
A rune glittered there on her palm, tiny and faceted with copper wire and black ink crisscrossing the flat silver sigil. Ancient magic, knotted and humming softly. Runed.
