I took a long bath, curled up in my robe with a fire going, and lost myself in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Completely enjoying myself with the book and the fire, I lost all track of time. I put the book down to reach for my can of soda and caught the reflection in the window of someone standing behind my sofa. I jumped and screamed, dropping my book on the floor as I leaped to my feet and whirled around. It took me a moment to realize it was Marsh standing there. With my heart pounding so hard I thought it might come out of my chest, I yelled at him, "Jesus Christ, Marsh! Why are you sneaking up on me? You scared the shit out of me!"

Every so often his mouth moved, whispering words too faint to hear. Harlow came to stand over them, armour dented, hair matted with ash and blood. Her face was hard as granite. “We can’t keep him here,” she said. “Not like this.” Killian looked up sharply. “He’s not going anywhere.” “He’s not your cousin anymore.” The words hit harder than any blade. He shoved to his feet, fangs bared, shadows curling at his heels. “Say that again.” But before it could break into violence, Maera, the guild’s scholar, pushed between them. She carried a bundle of scrolls, dust thick on the vellum, her hands shaking.

There where now books with titles such as The Witch Within You, Herbs and Pentagrams, Spells and the Sabbaths, True Magic in the World. Maddie had never noticed that there were so many books on that subject. She was shocked when Omem suddenly stood in front of her. ‘Are you coming, child? Lunch is ready.’ Maddie nodded and left the library.

Countless books lined the shelves. Leaning forward, I picked up an old, rusty spellbook. After brushing off the dust and cobwebs, I opened it to find potions, magics, and spells of all kinds. “But how do I know which is the right one?” I wondered aloud. A brief silence followed. Then, a noise came from the back. My heart skipped. Moving closer to investigate, I spotted a small, aged book on the floor. Picking it up, I skimmed the first few pages. The book focused mainly on werewolves. Opening it further, my eyes widened—there, written boldly on the middle page, were potions, spells, and a cure for werewolf illness.

Magic pulsed from the pages like a heartbeat. And staring right at me? A title written in old, curling ink: “Luna of the Cursed Moon” I blinked. Nope. No thank you. I wanted a self-care spell, not a prophecy. I tried to turn the page—except the book bit me. “No. Ohhh no. We are NOT doing this fate-destiny-cosmic-mate nonsense. I just cleaned up a glitter chicken with sass issues!” But too late. Magic curled from the page like smoke, surrounding me, whispering…

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

In a cozy room filled with colorful toys and books, Theo, a curious and energetic 3-year-old, sat on the floor surrounded by his favorite stuffed animals. His nanny, Hazel, a kind and patient young woman, sat beside him with a book in her hands, ready to embark on a magical storytelling journey. Hazel: "Are you ready for a story, Theo?" Theo: "Yes, Hazel! Story, story!" Hazel smiled warmly and began to read from the book, her voice gentle and soothing as she brought the words to life.

He places the stack on another empty table. "Here you go, Miss Anna. If I may advise you, I suggest starting with this book here," he points to a red book with gold lettering. "It's about the division of the packs. Then go to this book here," he points to another book with a green cover. "This one is about the old kings and the once-powerful Luna of Mooncrest, and then the rest is up to you." Powerful Luna? I give Zahir a sincere, enthusiastic smile for his tips and dedication in fetching all these books for me.

I told the empty space in my heart. I didn’t sleep at all. The whole night I looked at the moon and stayed on the balcony until morning. A servant asked me to come and eat breakfast. The servant led me to the living room. I didn’t notice the furnishings last night but now, in the light, it looked brilliant. Mahogany chairs and tables. Cream walls and silver lined curtains. The couches were lime green with black lining. I looked at the table. A lady was basking in the sun outside and Sil was sitting on a chair. She changed her clothes. She looks well rested. Unfortunately, I didn’t look any better.
