It was over between us. Magnus took my breath away. A white blouse shirt featuring lace detailing at the throat was part of his attire, complemented by black pants and high boots. He slicked his dark hair back from his forehead and tied it at the back. On his left hand, a ruby ring glinted in the sunlight. He looked as if he had stepped out of another era.

“Let me show you.” Magnus stood just inside the threshold of her cell, arms folded. Today, his suit was olive-gray, the shoulders padded to perfection. Not a single wrinkle in sight. He looked like a man who didn’t lose control. But there were bruises beneath his eyes. And his right hand, it curled tighter every time he looked at her. She noticed. “I’ve let people lie to me before,” he said quietly. She didn’t flinch. “So don’t let me be one of them.”

“That’s not my problem.” “‘Then tell me, ‘Magno’, what is the problem? What is bothering you so much? Dude, calm down. You don’t have to be so worried all the time.’” Magnus frowned as he sipped. He hated being called ‘Magno’. People used to call him that since he was a little boy. It sounded like the name of a superhero he was not but most of all, it was just annoying. His best friend Tanner was the only one who still had the courage to call him by that stupid nickname.
