I just leaned into the shadow of a hemlock and looked down into the hollow below. Magnus was there. He wasn't a giant or a monster. He was just a man in a high-collared, heavy wool coat, standing by a small, stone-shielded fire. He was looking at a map held by one of his specialists, his finger tracing a line toward the western gap—the very place we were supposed to be running. He looked calm.
