What shred of nobility could a captive like you possibly possess?” I fell silent, grasping the silver blade and slitting my wrist open. Scarlet, scorching blood dripped steadily into the vessels. I did not stop until my body turned ice-cold and my lips blanched a sickly bruised purple. I leaned against the cold stone wall, sinking into a hollow stupor for a long while.

"But you are strong, Veyra. Stronger than I ever was." Veyra sat. Her tea went untouched. Maelin reached into a drawer and pulled out a faded book. Its cover was made of some kind of animal skin, cracked and ancient. She opened it to a page marked with a pressed violet. Veyra's throat closed. "The sacred bloodline ended generations ago," Maelin continued. "Or so we thought. But then you were born, in silence, under the red moon." "You knew I would have five mates." "I feared it. But I hoped we would be wrong, I hoped the fifth would never ever come."

"Blood of the Spawn, forcibly taken, you will resurrect your Mother." Maddie could do nothing to prevent it. The icy wind lashing at her face and the sheer sinister presence of Aosoth rendered her bones useless. She saw and felt Aosoth split the hem of her turtleneck, then with a vicious swipe, cut Maddie along her throat. The cut wasn't too deep, but blood started to seep down her neck. Aosoth walked back to the cauldron with Maddie's blood on the blade, then tipped it till a drop fell into the churning black liquid. The colour immediately changed from black to a poisonous green.

So I grabbed my teddy bear and walked down the stairs. When I came into the kitchen, I didn't saw my daddy and my mommy standing there, arguing and fighting. I just saw my mommy laying on the floor in a puddle of blood. The red liquid was coming out of her belly and flooded around her. Her eyes were wide open and her brown hair had become red of her blood. I whispered her name and grabbed her hand as I knelt next to her. The tears were falling down my cheeks like a waterfall. Her blood was now on my white pajamas. My hands were painted with her blood as I tried to shake her awake.

"What?! No, no, she was fine minutes ago. You have to be wrong." "Oh, child. I am never wrong." Her eyes glint strangely. "But there is one cure." "What is it? I'll find it at all cost." My gaze shoots to Lena, lying curled up on the floor, her skin pale and clammy, her fingers twitching in restless agony. "I need the blood of the baby's father," the midwife says. "My blood?" "Yes. Fresh and willingly given. It must bind the child’s spirit to life." "That's easy. Take it, take it right now, please."
