He bit into the tubers and roots, showing fine, white teeth, and tore at the greens and berries until he had consumed everything he had brought.
“You do not eat meat?” Poe asked after they had both satisfied their hunger.
“Only a little when my body craves?”
There was silence for a time except for the shifting flame and the whispering breeze.
“Loneliness,” Poe said finally, as if speaking to the darkness, “is bone-wearing and eats at you. No one to share your thoughts with. No one to find solace or support from. In such isolation one can lose their humanity, become an empty vessel waiting to be filled, and not with something for the good.”
