Mama was seated in her wheelchair, her hands trembling slightly as Leah handed her a glass of water.
“Ma, what is she talking about? What safe?” Leah asked gently, sitting across from her.
Mama stared at the water in her hands, her expression distant. “I don’t know,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Ma, please. If you know something, tell me. Big Margaret won’t stop. She’ll keep coming back,” Leah pressed.
Mama's eyes snapped up to meet her daughter’s. “Do you think I want this? That I enjoy being dragged into her schemes? Margaret has always been like this. Always wanting more, always taking what doesn’t belong to her.”
