The recording abruptly ended, leaving Nathan hanging on Xavier's enigmatic words. Fuelled by a tumultuous mix of anxiety and dread, Nathan found himself grappling with the possibility hinted at by Xavier's words. Did Xavier inadvertently cause harm to someone? And if so, could it possibly be Emily, his ex-wife? What had he done to her, and why was she bleeding from her head? Where was Emily now? Could she perhaps be…dead?

He was tired, he was angry, he felt frustrated yet hope pulsed through his veins as his gaze lingered on Maya's picture. Melissa had given up on retrieving her phone at this point. She could understand. The door opened, Xavier didn't look up, from Maya's picture as his finger trailed her features. Dirty, filthy rather yet still so beautiful. The welt and the bruise had not hidden her delicate frame or her red full lips he missed nipping on. Brian came in with takeouts which he evenly distributed among the crew who immediately began a ravenous feast.

A throat cleared behind me and I stilled, my body freezing at the point as his cologne made a clean sweep over me, goosebumps erupted on my skin like a water surge. Then, without k͏nowing it, Madeline grinned. Not a grin of joy but one from giving up the type that comes when a person finally quits battling themselves. Nathaniel looked at her, holding back the need to talk, to share something that could be too daring. But before he could do it the wind lifted again, bringing with it the smell of salt and the shout of seagulls up above. "Come on," he said softly, "Let's go back to the hotel before the night fully falls."
