As my hand touched her forehead, I froze—her skin was burning. “Why are you this hot?” I muttered, my voice rough with concern. “My… my head is pounding. I… I can’t… help me,” she whispered, her hands clawing at her throat as though she were about to strangle herself. I quickly grabbed her wrists, pulling her hands away. That was when I saw it—the mark on her neck. It glowed faintly, unnaturally, as if alive. For a split second, fear jolted through me. I almost pushed her away. Almost.

Alpha Dean’s chair scraped faintly as he rose to his feet, his face etched with disbelief. Loretta’s cup nearly slipped from her hand. You can dig in now.” Mark left me to finish the breakfast and I dug in, It was a piece of beef with a burger, fries, fruits and vegetable salad, and soup. It was too much, a bit-perfect meal for me as I thought I couldn't eat everything but I did. Mark returned a few minutes after and beamed at me, “Oh, I have a surprise for you.”

She sighed and briefly told Mary what she had encountered that day, from accidentally having gone into arousal to having had a temporary mark from an alpha. The room lacked furniture, and she placed the plate of fruit beside the small table supporting their vintage 1880's TV. Marko, noticing the plate of fruit, asked, "What do we have here?" Mr Howard said as he said goodbye to Mark. He had an errand to run, so he couldn't spend much time with his adopted son. After all, their conversation was over, and it was all about Aileen. Mark's head nodded once, and he gave a slight smile to allow Mr Howard to leave. A few seconds later, Mark was enjoying his own meal. He wasn't in a hurry, as he didn't have much to do today. When his meal was finished, Mark sipped the dragon fruit juice Mr Howard had also ordered. Then he left, not bothering to leave the money on the table. He was sure that Mr Howard had paid him.

We passed the time by climbing trees, seeing who could go the highest, and by trying to construct a rope swing, using ivy that was growing up the rock face. Mark had disappeared from view for a few seconds before he reappeared clutching something in his hands. “Hey, look what I found,” he said, holding up a blue flag. “Shit Mark! Where did you find that?” I said, jumping down from the tree and walking over to him. “It was just over that ridge, over there,” he said pointing straight ahead. “You should have left it where it was!” I said, smacking his arm in annoyance. “Why? Isn’t it the whole point of the game that we’re supposed to be collecting these things?”
