They don’t seem to be in pain anymore, either, and I wonder if the worst has passed. None of them is crying

"I saw..." The silence stretched out. My enhanced hearing picked up the rapid beating of everyone's hearts, the shallow breaths, the slight rustle of clothing as we all leaned forward unconsciously. Maria opened her eyes, and the raw terror in them made my blood run cold. "I saw a monster."

Their eyes flickered wildly, sometimes sharp with recognition, sometimes clouded with the same animal terror that had ruled them in the meadow. They were not whole. But they were alive. The bramble-haired woman clung to Ava’s side, whispering under her breath, words Ava couldn’t always catch—half prayers, half apologies.
