"If you don't want to live, then you can die too." To my surprise, that one strike had not only killed Tyler but also awakened Evelyn. But Edith had already stopped listening to Evelyn's words. She stared blankly ahead, like her soul had left her body. I followed her gaze. It was where Tyler had fallen. I sighed and left the hospital.

His small body shook, and slowly…so slowly…the gold faded from his eyes. Martha sat frozen behind the wheel, staring at us with absolute terror etched across her face. "What…what is he?" she whispered. I leaned down until my face was level with hers through the window. Let her see the gold still blazing in my eyes. Let her see exactly what she'd almost taken. "Your worst nightmare." The police officers we'd coordinated with pushed through the gathering crowd. "Martha Harvey?" One of them approached, hand on his cuffs. "Yes, but you don't understand!" Martha pointed at us with shaking fingers. "Did you see…his eyes…he's not human! None of them are! They're monsters!"

Sarah That’s it. I was dead. In a matter of minutes, I think I’d experienced every emotion possible. I’d gone from lonely, to horny, to happy, to hurt, to euphoric and now…dread. I’d done it again. This time I couldn’t say I was seduced. I’d asked for it, begged for it. And Oliver delivered. Oh God, did he deliver. He gave my body exactly what it was craving and more. He made me feel safe and cherished, like a precious doll.

I’m going to live the life you thought you were giving me, while you rot in hell. Black spots danced across my vision. The fire in my chest was turning into an icy vacuum, pulling my soul toward the floor. I could hear Marcus laughing in the distance, oblivious to the fact that his world was ending twenty feet away. I forced my eyes to stay open, forced my shattered nervous system to give me one last surge of defiance. I reached out, my fingers catching the hem of her dress, staining the bright yellow fabric with the dark smudge of my desperation. "Lurii," I rasped, the words tasting like copper and bile. My voice was a ghostly shadow of itself, but the promise behind it was absolute.

I lick my lip to try and feel out what's so wrong, only to find teeth sharp and long, and a sensation of fur around the edges. I wolfed. I’m a wolf, and I shake it off, shake my head to bring my sight back to clear and fuzz-free, so I can turn and see the others around me. A weird movement that’s ungraceful and dog-like, that knocks me off balance. Nearby, a smaller wolf sits and looks at its paws, as I was, yet it glows too. Blue and surreal, as though the moon has rolled down to illuminate us with her touch, and it’s eerily pretty. Something I have never seen before at an Awakening. They don’t seem to be in pain anymore, either, and I wonder if the worst has passed. None of them is crying

"I saw..." The silence stretched out. My enhanced hearing picked up the rapid beating of everyone's hearts, the shallow breaths, the slight rustle of clothing as we all leaned forward unconsciously. Maria opened her eyes, and the raw terror in them made my blood run cold. "I saw a monster."

Their eyes flickered wildly, sometimes sharp with recognition, sometimes clouded with the same animal terror that had ruled them in the meadow. They were not whole. But they were alive. The bramble-haired woman clung to Ava’s side, whispering under her breath, words Ava couldn’t always catch—half prayers, half apologies. Ava tightened her grip on the woman’s arm, grounding her. “We’ll be safe when we reach the ridge,” Mara said, walking ahead. Her bow was slung across her shoulder, but her fingers twitched near the string, restless, suspicious. Her gaze kept flicking back at the rescued, as if expecting them to lunge at any moment.

The awakening was difficult. My head ached, my throat itched, my heart was lousy and, frankly, my conscience tormented me in front of Martha. There was only one desire - to wash! Scrub the skin with a washcloth to redness, wash off the sticky coating of all the emotions experienced during the day. The room was plunged into evening twilight, there was silence. From the street came the voice of Martha, talking to someone. Somehow she braided her hair and left the house.

Maris points straight at me. “She isn’t unstable. She’s awakening.” The pack erupts—gasps, panic, shock. Lydia steps forward, voice colder than ice. “Awakening into what?” Maris smiles—slow, ancient, terrifying. “Into something this pack hasn’t seen for centuries.” The world tilts. My knees buckle. Caleb grabs my arm, holding me up, his grip fierce and grounding. Electricity crackles where his fingers touch me. He breathes one word—just for me.
