He slowly stood up– his left leg couldn't hold his weight, so he balanced on the table across from us. "I'm gonna fucking kill you both." Rory and I both laughed. Men could never accept defeat. Let alone defeat from two girls. "You're pathetic, Matteo. And, you always will be," I laughed. "You won't do anything. You can't kill me. You don't have it in you. You're weak..... and scared. So who's the real pathetic one here," Matteo grinned. He kicked off the table and dove towards me. But, before he could get too close, I pulled the trigger of the gun. The loud bam hurt my ears. Rory covered her head and groaned. I could feel the vibration of the gun in my hand.

I could feel my heart bleed as I heard those words from my mate's mouth. The screen lit up immediately with a paused video. I hit play and Matteo appeared. It was the same video I’d seen but this time, Raphael had managed to get me the clearest version ever. Matteo had the same jacket on, same shoes, and that same nervous glance over his shoulder. He answered a call and men stepped out of the shadows. I closed my eyes tightly as the shots rang out. I couldn’t revisit that agony. When I opened my eyes, Matteo had collapsed beside a cart of fruit. Blood bloomed fast beneath him, leaking into the pavement like ink in water. People around screamed. Some ran. The shooters didn’t even pause; they snatched his phone and vanished.

“I’ll give you two seconds, Kitty. Come over to my side, or I shoot him.” Kate swallowed hard as she nodded and let her feet take a step forward, slowly walking toward Lucas, her eyes trained on his gun. As she took another step, she felt someone grab her hand and pull her backward, then she felt her back hit Matteo's chest, the contact driving Lucas mad as he pulled the trigger, shooting Matteo in the leg. “Lucas, no!” Kate cried as she turned back to see Matteo fall to the ground, his face pale. She rushed toward him, holding him closely to her body as fat tears streamed down her cheeks.

The gunshot echoed in the warehouse, deafening. Matteo staggered back, a shout of pain tearing from his throat as the bullet ripped through his shoulder. Chaos erupted. Ethan grabbed Cassie, cutting through the rope binding her wrists.

He howled and dropped, before he could reach for his weapon again, I had it in my hands. I didn’t hesitate, two clean shots one to the chest, one to the head and he was still. Matteo moved with brutal efficiency behind me, keeping some of the shooters pinned. I caught a flash of movement above, the sniper. Without thinking, I scooped a loose piece of broken metal from the ground and hurled it with everything I had. It clanged against the support beam, the sniper flinched, and in that heartbeat of a second, Matteo shot him.

They weren't letting this one take out their platoon-man or woman. "See the thickness around the chest?" Matt said to Stephon. "Got it. He's not getting any closer." Matt hunkered down and watched his friend's steady pull of the trigger. The loud pop echoed; his earplugs made it sound like a dull thud. "Chest shot, but no explosion." Stephon lined up his rifle sight. Matt rolled his eyes. "No shit, Sherlock. Want me to try?" Matt felt a tap on his shoulder and looked behind him at the platoon leader who had crawled over.

And Damon saw it the exact second before it happened. The decision. If Matteo couldn’t own the ending, he would ruin it. He pivoted violently, gun snapping toward Luca on the ground. Damon didn’t think. Didn’t calculate. Didn’t even breathe. He fired. The shot cracked through the rain. Matteo jerked. His gun discharged wildly into the dark. Then slipped from his fingers and vanished into the mud. For one suspended second, nobody moved. Matteo looked down. At the blood spreading across his lower abdomen.
